Thomasian athletes set out to make a statement as the University of Santo Tomas held its University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 86 Kickoff Party this September 27, 2023, at the Quadricentennial Pavillion.
Riding off a dominant 6-year winning streak as the Overall Champions, UST looks ahead to the upcoming Season 86 with high hopes of bagging its 7th consecutive win.
In an opening remark, Rector Magnificus Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD challenged athletes and the whole Thomasian community to use the memories and struggles of previous years to strengthen their resolve for the challenges yet to come this season.
“More than getting the titles, recognition, and awards for the university, UAAP Season 86 is a showcase of passion, grit, and indomitable Thomasian spirit. You will compete against your toughest competitor and that is yourself,” he added.
The event featured various dance numbers and talent showcases by our Thomasian sports teams and dance troupes, with some even collaborating for a performance. Signature Go USTe chants led by the UST Yellowjackets shook the very venue as they were heard throughout the event.
A small awards ceremony was also held, which recognized the efforts done by participating sports teams in this Kickoff event, with the UST Taekwondo and Poomsae teams winning the award for Best Performance, amongst others.
In the closing remarks for the event, Sports Regent Rev. Fr. Rodel S. Cansancio, O.P. echoed his sentiments from last year, believing that the university will once again be this year’s UAAP Overall Championship.
“Since we are Thomasians, we are the Growling Tigers at Tigresses, sigurado na yang Overall Champion na ‘yan!” Fr. Cansancio emphatically claimed.
The event formally ended with the singing of the UST Hymn, which was then followed by a parade of all the athletes across the university campus.
