The Communication Arts Students’ Association (CASA) held Halalan Sa Midya 2022, today, March 17 from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The event was conceived to promote media literacy and voter education in consonance with the upcoming Philippine National Elections. The event was held on Zoom which was open to all Thomasians and non-Thomasians and was also streamed live via the UST-CASA Facebook page.
With over 200 participants who registered and joined the Zoom meeting, the webinar featured two veteran figures within the media industry as guests speakers, Mr. Raffy Tima, a Senior News Producer and Anchor on GMA Network, and Mr. Ed Lingao, a veteran journalist, war correspondent, and UP alumnus who currently works at TV5. The speakers expressed their thoughts as seasoned journalists in answering different questions during 'KwenTuklasin,' an interview segment that focused on a hot pot of issues relevant to today's political and media landscape. They also offered insights and feedback regarding current trending hashtags in the segment, 'No Filter.' Towards the end of the event, Mr. Lingao answered numerous questions from the audience in a form of a question-and-answer portion. Mr. Tima had to leave the event early due to prior commitments.
Halaan Sa Midya 2022 opened an opportunity for everyone to learn what it means to be responsible users of social media platforms. Disinformation is a rampant problem in society, hence events of this kind play a vital role in both media and civic education. As Ms. Czarina Carandang, Project Head, stated in her opening remarks, “there are various topics and issues that are seen in social media and it is our responsibility to differentiate the facts from the fake ones.”
The event was made possible with the efforts of the Team President and Team P.R.O. of UST-CASA in partnership with Arellano University Multimedia Club, Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL), Center for Service-Learning, and Community Engagement (CSCE), Social Sciences Society (SSS) - CEU Manila.
