Reflecting of those who pursue peace

Last May 29, I found myself contemplating the unsung heroes of our world—the United Nations Peacekeepers. It's a role that goes unnoticed, yet they play a vital part in keeping our fragile world intact. We often think we do not need them but cannot deny that their presence calms us, especially in times of distress. Their work is demanding, requiring immense courage, dedication, and compassion, and yet they are just like me. Just like my family, my friends, and the people I interact with: humans with dreams, fears, and hopes.

As I sat down with a can of Coca-Cola Zero Sugar this morning, I couldn't help but wonder about the peacekeepers I've read and heard about. They leave behind their families, homes, and their lives of comfort to venture into conflict zones, where danger lurks around every corner. Their choice to serve humanity in such a selfless manner humbles me.

They are mothers and fathers, bidding tearful farewells to their children, promising to return home soon. They are husbands or wives, hugging their partners tightly, whispering words of love and reassurance before embarking on a mission that holds unknown risks. They are children, constantly repeating their assurances to their parents and the friends they leave behind. Their commitment to protecting the innocent, bridging divides, and fostering harmony is genuinely remarkable.

In a moment of deep thinking, I envisioned a peacekeeper sitting under a sky full of stars, writing a letter to a loved one, thousands of miles away. Their words convey love and unashamed nostalgia. I envisioned a peacekeeper longing for their family and friends before being grounded by the reality that they are a peacekeeper, working to ensure their family and friends live a life free of danger and destruction. Despite the hardships and dangers, their spirits remain unbroken. Their belief in the power of peace is their driving force, a guiding light that keeps them going.

These peacekeepers come from different nations, speaking other languages, and yet, they find common ground despite their eclecticism. They work shoulder to shoulder, learning from one another, transcending cultural barriers, and forming bonds that go beyond borders. Their camaraderie is a testament to the strength of unity and the shared pursuit of a better tomorrow.

I often wonder how they cope with the tragedies they witness—the suffering of innocent children, and the devastation left in the wake of conflict. Their hearts must ache, burdened by the weight of the world's pain. Yet, they soldier on, offering solace, aid, and a glimmer of hope to those who need it most. Their acts of kindness, both big and small, make a world of difference to those affected by violence and strife.

I can't help but feel gratitude for these remarkable individuals—the United Nations Peacekeepers. They may be heroes in the eyes of many, but they are still humans at their very core, making sacrifices that are often overlooked. As we celebrate the 75th International Day of UN Peacekeepers that recently occurred on the 29th of May, let us remember their tireless efforts and their unwavering commitment to peace, and honor their humanity.
