Starring well-known actors such as Angel Locsin, Bea Alonzo, Shaina Magdayao, Toni Gonzaga, Enchong Dee and directed by one of Philippine cinema's most prolific directors of the current era, Cathy Garcia-Molina, Four Sisters and a Wedding is a modern classic and a must-watch for anyone hoping to immerse themselves into the Filipino pop culture.
The film holds a special place in the hearts of its audience as a Filipino family drama and has been a crowd favorite within the genre ever since its release way back in 2013. Four Sisters and a Wedding remains relevant in the country's pop culture sphere even well into a decade. Not to mention, iconic lines, characters, and scenes are still popular nowadays, with people using them as references in daily conversations. Examples of these are the lines “ma, I’m sorry ma” and “are you saying that I’m unfair?” which are often used as jokes, referencing the film's plethora of memorable dialogue.
One thing I’ve always loved about the film is its message and how the actors and crew were able to relay it to the audience. There is so much to unpack with its exploration of the typical Filipino family dynamics. From parental favoritism to the pressure of being the eldest sibling, to even the struggles of being different and getting treated like the "black sheep." This film depicts the life of a Filipino household with sharp observation and in such great detail, you'd think it was based on a real family’s story.
Besides the plot, the dialogue and humor are something to look forward to. It’s very commendable of the writers to come up with such lines and scenes and for the actors to be able to execute them naturally. Though I do not speak on behalf of everyone who's watched the movie, I personally found some scenes that had me clutching my stomach.
Overall, if I were to rate this film, I’d give it a 9/10. It’s a family-friendly film that depicts the real-life struggles and heart behind a Filipino household, balancing drama that hits close to home with lighthearted scenes that allow the audience to breathe throughout its runtime.
With the success of the first film, a prequel was developed and was released in 2020. Cleverly titled Four Sisters Before the Wedding, the film tackles their childhood as they face the brink of their parents' separation. The movie stars younger actors as counterparts to the original ensemble cast and is directed by Mae Czarina Cruz-Alviar.
Four Sisters and a Wedding and its prequel are available on Netflix Philippines.
