CASAns unite for the upcoming #HalalanSaMidya2022

Board by Ranch Ramas

With the 2022 Philippine National Elections just around the corner, the spread of fake news has only continued to plague the media industry. It’s unfortunate to see the dissemination of false information to the public, especially as it holds no regard for the image and reputation it is trying to tarnish. In response to this, UST-CASA is hosting #HalalanSaMidya2022, an event that aims to shed light on the topic of the media’s role in spreading information and news all over the world.

For background, we asked Mr. Ranch Ramas, one of the Officers-in-Charge, some questions that will give us more insight on the upcoming event.

Ranch Ramas. Public Relations Officer of UST-CASA 2021-2022, and Officer-in-Charge for #HalalanSaMidya2022

What is #HalalanSaMidya2022?
#HalalanSaMidya2022 is a platform for media practitioners to voice out their insights on how vital and significant the role of media is, more importantly during an election season like what we have currently.

What is the relevance of #HalalanSaMidya to society especially during campaign season?
As the name of the event suggests, the event would challenge one’s beliefs in seeing media as an art, science, and tool of information dissemination. The event would make [one] understand how the media, especially in our country, can make and ripple a huge impact of change.

Why should people look forward to #HalalanSaMidya?
We have invited guests that would really give great insights on different topics—from the media’s role with them being the watchdogs of the government, to the use of our daily social media scrolling—it’s [the] diversity of thought and it would really help a lot of people (not just us Comm[unication] majors) to really understand what we see and read, especially fact-checking posts and articles.

Has this event been done in previous years?
Actually, this would be the first event [of its kind] in UST-CASA considering this is the platform of the incumbent President of the Association, Martin Gabrielle P. Alcantara. I’m not sure if the nature of the event is the first among many but I do believe that UST-CASA has always been vocal and active in social issues, and creating dialogue between people.

Besides the main event, the core team of #HalalanSaMidya2022 also came up with some pre-publicity segments to hype the audience about the upcoming event. These segments are namely #BosesNgCASA and #SanaSaHalalan.

#BosesNgCASA is a pre-publicity segment that focuses on the perspective of CASAns in regards to fake news on the internet. In this segment, they interview communication students from different batches and blocks and let them "voice" out their own take on the prominent spread of misinformation and disinformation in the media.

As for #SanaSaHalalan, this pre-publicity segment focuses more on answer-based interactions with the audience. Here they ask what is their "Sana" in the upcoming 2022 National elections.

Here are some of the answers from the comment box of the said segment:

💓" - Ymanuel Roxas

CASA Chronicle highly encourages everyone to participate in #HalalansaMidya2022. Let us broaden our knowledge and learn more about the media's vital role in shaping society, especially with the upcoming elections on May 9, 2022.

We would also like to note that this event is accessible to everyone, including non-CASAns and non-Thomasians.

Secure your participation for #HalalanSaMidya2022! The event will be streamed via Facebook Live on March 17th, 2022 at the official UST-CASA page and can be viewed congruently via Zoom conference. Note that only pre-registered attendees will have access to the latter.
