EJ Obiena returns to UST for a victory homecoming

Yesterday, September 29, 2022, Thomasian pole vaulting ace, Ernest John "EJ" Obiena, returned to campus with his victory homecoming event hosted by the University of Santo Tomas. A testimonial program was held followed by a press conference at the Dr. Robert C. Sy Grand Ballroom in the BGPOP building. He was awarded with the Pope John Paul II Award for his historical achievements in pole vaulting.

Obiena is currently ranked as the No. 3 pole vaulter in the world. EJ has made a name for himself setting and breaking records and has made history as the first Filipino who ever won a medal at the World Athletics Championship. 


Looking back on his eventful season this year, Obiena impressively racked up 17 medals which consist of 12 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals.


Recently, on September 23, he broke a 23-year-old meet record at the GalĂ  dei Castelli by leaping 5.81 meters and going home as a record-breaking gold medalist.


Greatness never stops for Obiena as he is now set to return to Italy to train for the Paris Summer Olympics 2024.
